DOMINIC FEATURED ON NEW
WEBSITE - 'BEHIND THE NOTES'
Dominic
is featured in a terrific video interview on a newly launched website called
'Behind The Notes'. Here's what they say on the site...
One thing that struck us is Dominic's down to earth nature. Yes, everything
you hear about the guy is true, he is REAL, no B.S. about him. We met
literally through an email describing what we wanted to do with him, we
weren’t expecting a reply, at the very most a "thanks but no thanks", so you
can imagine our surprise when he suggested doing lunch to discuss this
interview.
Due to diary scheduling, lunch never quite happened and the emails petered
off. We thought we'd lost him. It wasn’t until some 10 months later that we
went to the Apple show at Earls court to see him perform that we were able
to approach him in the flesh where we swapped numbers and email addresses.
Cut to two weeks later we did lunch, took a laptop with our Etienne Mbappe
interview and four weeks after that we were at his home filming what you see
here.
We can honestly tell you that he is one guy who practises what he preaches,
he is the same on and off camera and is deserving of the success and
accolades he has received to date.

'MEET THE BOSSA' - GUITAR
TECHNIQUES MAGAZINE
The
January 2006 issue of 'Guitar Techniques' magazine features another video
lesson by Dominic, this time teaching some simple first steps about playing
bossa nova. "In the '60's when I was a kid living in South America, there
was the bossa nova, which I listened to and I've always liked Brazilian
music and had an understanding for Latin music, so I've tended to apply it
to everything I do, rhythmically - even in rock."
Customs
House Workshop Video
On
July 23, Dominic held an extremely interesting guitar workshop at the
Customs House in South Shields, near Newcastle. Courtesy of Sting.com you

In the workshop Dominic spoke on wide range of subjects including his
career, his influences, and session work to name just a few and demonstrated
first hand some of the techniques that have led to be him being so sought
after. There are seven parts of the video running in at a total of around 90
minutes. It's fascinating stuff, and Sting.com have made it available free
to view. Be sure to check it out!

LAUNCH AT JOE' PUB IN NEW YORK
Billboard's Jonathan Cohen reviewed the Joe's
Pub album launch gig in New York as follows: sting guitarist Dominic Miller got a boost
from the former Police frontman as well as trumpeter Chris Botti last night
(March 4) at New York's Joe's Pub, in a show that celebrated the release of
his new Decca album, Shapes. Sting and Botti were both on hand for
the show-opening Shape of My Heart, which first appeared on the
former's 1993 A&M album Ten Summoner's Tales. Botti stuck around to
guest on Bach's Prelude No. 3 for Clavier and Schubert's Ave Maria,
two of the many venerable classical pieces Miller reinterprets on guitar for
Shapes. The show also featured his versions of Erik Satie's
Gymnopedie No. 1, Bach's Presto [Violin in G Minor] and Air on
a G String [Orchestral Suite No. 3] and a mesmerizing run through
Miller's own composition, Rush Hour.
Backstage after the performance, Miller told Billboard.com he would "just
try to fit these kinds of shows in on days off" from Sting's tour in support
of the new album Sacred Love, which has dates booked through June 20
in Munich. He has also begun conceptualizing his next classical record:
"It's great because I have time to learn the pieces in my hotel room."
Miller says he is looking forward to the Sting tour transitioning from
theaters into arenas, although he notes, "in an arena, you can still play
quiet stuff." He says the Police oldie Hole in My Life has been
dropped from the 20-song set list, which does not change from night to
night. But he reveals that The Hounds of Winter, from Sting's 1996
release Mercury Falling, has been rehearsed and will likely begin
appearing in the show at some point in the future. "We're somewhat
restricted because of lights and production in terms of changing the set,"
Miller says. "But we have a lot to choose from for improvisation, and right
now, we're just trying to get comfortable with the songs from the album."
THIRD WORLD GETS COLOGNE LAUNCH
Dominic is to launch his new album
Third World with a concert in Cologne on January 6, 2004. The venue is an
intimate one: the Stadtgarten, Venloer Str.40, 50672 Koeln (Cologne) at
8.30pm so this will be great chance to see Dominic up close playing both new
material and old favourites. Tickets can now be purchased online in Germany
at
www.stadtgarten.de - check under
'Konzertsaal' and you will see the gig listed. Fans outside of Germany can
order tickets online by credit card at
www.koelnticket.de and search for 'Dominic Miller'.
GUITARIST MAGAZINE FEATURE
Dominic is featured in the August 2003 issue
of the UK's "Guitarist" magazine. Over a four page interview with David
Mead, Dominic talks about the recording of his latest album Shapes,
his guitar style and David Mead explains and demonstrates how to play the
main guitar riff of Shape Of My Heart on the free CD that accompanies
the magazine. There are also some excellent new photographs of Dominic by
James Cheadle to accompany the interview. If you're outside of the UK, never
fear, the magazine can be ordered on-line
here.
SHAPES TOPPLED BY
THREE TENORS
A combination of Pavarotti, Carreras and
Domingo in the guise of their "The Best Of The Three Tenors" has finally
knocked Dominic's album, Shapes, off the top of the official UK Classical album charts. Shapes
topped the chart for four weeks and broke the official UK album chart making
the
#38 slot on its first week of release.
BBC RADIO WILTSHIRE INTERVIEW
Dominic recently dropped into BBC Radio Swindon and Wiltshire for a chat on
The Afternoon Show with Graham Seaman. In an insightful and amusing interview Dominic talks about
how he learned guitar and studied music, how he became one of Sting's closest collaborators, why being nervous before
going on stage is important, about the success of Shapes and explains how that guitar riff for Sting's
hit Shape of my Heart came about. The radio station is also giving
away two copies of Shapes in a competition. Listen to the interview

BBC Wiltshire website.

THE BALLS TO STAND NAKED
Nik
Askew makes films. Films that reflect the world through his eyes, so are
probably a more accurate reflection than any words. Some of Nik's films can
be seen at Monday9am who make and screen short films that provoke you to
think about what it is that makes you feel truly alive. As it says on their
website, "We don't set out to answer these questions for you, as often they
are the ones that only you should answer. Your life is your journey, if you
choose it to be. Perhaps no one can give you your answers, but many things
can help you find them for yourself."
A few months ago Nik contacted Dominic to see if he was interested in
getting together and having a chat and possible working together on
something... 'the balls to stand naked' stars Dominic Miller clocks in at 6
minutes 22 seconds. So how does everything we create, start? Perhaps it is
with the relationship between two things, between us and a somebody or a
something? Perhaps it is in our reaction with the world around us. And if it
is, do we have a responsibility to ourselves to act on such potential
relationships when we know that there is a 'story crying out to be told'?
Dominic has for a long time recognised this pattern in his composition. As
for the standing naked, you will have to see the film at

IMPORTANT - CUSTOMS HOUSE
CHANGES
We have some important
news concerning Dominic's planned show at the Customs House in Newcastle,
this coming July. Due to a booking mix-up, regrettably Dominic can no longer
perform at the Customs House on the evening of Friday, July 22. He realises
how disappointing this will be for fans - especially those that have bought
tickets - and has been working very hard with the venue to provide an
alternative. This hasn't been easy given he's on tour some 4,000 miles away!
However, these arrangements have now been finalised and we can confirm that
Dominic will instead, be performing his planned solo show at 3pm on
Saturday, July 23 at the same venue. If you had originally bought tickets
for July 22 they remain valid for the rescheduled show at 3pm on July 23.
The guitar workshop at 11.45am on Saturday, July 23 remains unaffected and
will proceed as originally planned.
On the evening of Friday, July 22, Dominic is performing at the Dundee
Guitar Festival as part of "Guitars 3" alongside Neil Stacey and Martin
Taylor. Performance time is 7.30pm-10pm. For more information visit
http://dundeeguitarfestival.com
At the guitar workshop Dominic
will be demonstrating the techniques and style which have made him one
of the most gifted and sought-after guitarists in the world. As well as
learning tips and methods to improve your own playing, Dominic will also be
pleased to answer any of your questions. Tickets for the workshop are priced
at £9 and are available from the box office.
IRVING
PLAZA CONCERT TICKET WINNER
The winner of Dominic's recent contest for a pair of tickets
to the exclusive Sting show at Irving Plaza in New York City on
May 14 was Lynne Hazelden from the UK. Tickets for this show are not available to the general public, and
only a very
limited number were available to Sting.com members and sold out in minutes,
but Dominic kindly donated a pair of tickets from his personal allotment
for this show.
Commenting about the contest, Dominic
said "Thank
you all for sending such inspiring essays on your perception of my
fascination with J.S.Bach. I was truly blown away with your understanding. I
didn't read one I didn't like or find insightful. It was a tough choice but
I have made one. Just so you know, I wasn't informed of who penned any of
the entries because I wanted to make a non biased decision and asked that
the writer's names be removed from the entries before they were sent to me.
What made me choose the winning entry was the reference to opening my heart
to failure. This is so true for me. I wasn't sure about the 'sitting on my
ass' comment but it made me laugh and is actually true. I was worried about
being considered masterful but I won't complain. The writer knows I want to
improve. What clinched it was 'a journey that takes a lifetime'. This is
what it's all about for me. So whoever you are I am inviting you to the show
on the 14th and I want to meet you and your guest so we can talk more about
our shared passion, J.S.Bach."
MIDNIGHT SHOWS IN GERMANY
Dominic is to play three shows showcasing the Shapes album in
Germany during June 2004. The shows - in Berlin, Cologne and Munich - are all
scheduled to take place late evening after the Sting concerts have finished
in the same cities. The three dates are at:
Jun 15,
A-Trane, Berlin
Jun 16,
Stadtgarten, Cologne
Jun 20,
Night Club Bar (Bayerischer Hof), Munich
Prices will be between €15-€17
Check out the venues websites for more
information and contact details about tickets. Fans from outside of Germany
can purchase tickets for the Cologne concert from

DOMINIC FEATURED ON ERIC STARR RELEASE
Dominic
features on the debut release of Eric Starr's new album entitled She.
Eric is is a very respected drummer who studied with the legendary jazz
drummer Joe Morello (Dave Brubeck) and has collaborated in the past with
artists as diverses as The Chieftains, Los Lobos, John Lombardo and Mary
Ramsey (The 10,000 Maniacs), James Carter (Atlantic recording artist), Leroy
Jones (Harry Connick), Don "Red" Menza (Buddy Rich Orchestra), Carmen Leggio
(Gene Krupa Quartet), Bill Crow (Gerry Mulligan), Andy McCloud (Elvin
Jones), Sam Noto (Count Basie Orchestra), and Al Tinney (Charlie Parker).
Eric's concept for 'She' was to bring together musicians from widely
different backgrounds and disciplines to create a body of music that is, at
once, steeped in the jazz tradition yet distinctive and fresh. To accomplish
this task, Starr handpicked musicians whom he thought would best realize
this objective. The first call was to Dominic Miller. "Dominic was perfect
for the Jobim influenced tunes, as he specializes in nylon-stringed acoustic
guitar," explains Starr. "Dominic’s South American roots still really drive
his playing; his touch is sensitive yet exact, and his timing is
impeccable." Find out more about Eric, and the album She, and listen
to some music from the album at
www.ericstarrgroup.com.
SHAPES RELEASED
Dominic's latest album is a collection of interpretations of great classical
works. Shapes was released on 2 June. Dominic says, "The making of Shapes has been a voyage of discovery for me. I have
been in the enviable position of recording a collection of some of the
greatest works of classical music ever written with the best people in the
business. Coming from a more pop or contemporary world it was important for
me to approach these works in a way that I could relate to which started off
by deconstructing the pieces purely for the sake of understanding their
workings and nature and then rebuilding them. I have had two main rules:
firstly, the need to try and make a sincere connection with the composer and
secondly, the need to be as sincere as I could to you. This album never
would have happened without great team work.
"BBC Worldwide have a team who have guided me in so many ways including
some of Jane Carter’s inspired repertoire choices, particularly the B Minor
Mass movement and Jim Reid's courage for taking this on and giving me the
freedom and encouragement to express myself. Nick Patrick gave his magical
ears and experience to the production. Nick Ingman demonstrated how he's one
of the world's greatest string arrangers. Richard Cottle played some
inspired keyboards and electronic percussion and he and Andy Green did their
work on all the computer programming which is an important part of record
making today. I have been joined by the world's greatest musicians in their
field including Pino Palladino on bass, Miles Bould on percussion and Jason
Rebello on piano. Moya Brennan created some haunting vocal textures and I
have had the great honour of working with the two greatest singers in their
field: Sting and Placido Domingo. The result is like a diary or photo album
of this voyage, which is my pleasure to share with all music lovers."
AS RECOMMENDED BY
DOMINIC Dominic recently spoke to Ben
Sloan of London's Metro newspaper about his five favourite restaurants in
the capital. Greek, Indian, French or Italian - his appetite is as wide as
his repertoire. Here are his five recommendations in case you're coming to
London for some of his upcoming shows!
Wine and Kebab, 343 Fulham Road, SW10 [tel
020 7352 0967]
Tube: South Kensington - "I've been going there
since 1979, when I had my first job playing bossa nova and covers. It's a
fantastic Greek restaurant and the owner is a true gentleman. The food is
amazing and I'm glad they've kept the same unglamorous sign outside.
They're open until 3am so, when I'm starving, I know there's a place to
go."
Venegazzo, 31-32 Battersea Square, SW11
[tel 020 7978 5395]
Tube: Clapham Junction - "It's got a nice
atmosphere, serves very good Italian food, has a good wine list and it's
not too expensive. They always give me a glass of champagne on the house -
a nice touch. It's got a nice family vibe, which is what Italian
restaurants are good at."
La Brasserie, 272 Brompton Road, SW3 [tel
020 7581 3089] Tube: South Kensington - "It's a
great place to go on a Sunday morning and read the papers. My wife's
French, so she gets the French papers, and we read them from cover to
cover. You may have to queue, but it's worth the wait."
Noor Jahan, 2a Bina Gardens, SW5 [tel
020 7373 8522] Tube: Gloucester Road
- "Just the best ruby in town. It's a little bit celeb and it's one of the
only Indians where you have to book, but what I like is that it's the
opposite service you'll get in these other restaurants, because they're
actually quite stroppy. I find that endearing, and the food is so good you
can't really argue."

- "My kids love it and I get looked after, though I wouldn't go without
them. They do brilliant hot dogs with all the trimmings and you watch them
cook it. They do wicked milkshakes - I always end up sipping my kid's
drinks, so we have to buy another to keep them happy."
DOMINIC PERFORMS AT
CLASSICAL BRITS
Dominic was one of the performers at this years Classical Brit Awards which
were held at London's Royal Albert Hall on 22 May. It was an excellent
launch for his new album of interpretations of popular classics - Shapes. A starry line-up of great artists contributed several
magical moments on an evening of performance, appreciation and celebration.
Dominic was accompanied by the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Simon
Wright and performed Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor, Bach's Mass In
B Minor and the song he co-wrote with Sting, Shape of My Heart.
The biggest surprise of the evening occurred during the latter song, when
Sting wandered out to join Dominic and provide guests vocals and in the
process becoming the first mainstream pop star to appear at the awards since
their inception. The awards
ceremony - including Dominic's performance - was broadcast on ITV on 1
June.
DOMINIC ON FREE CD SAMPLER
On 1 June, the UK's Sunday Express newspaper gave a free Classical
Brits sampler CD to their one million plus readers.
The 15 track CD featured Dominic' version of Bach's Mass In B Minor
as well as tracks by the great violinist Maxim Vengerov, Luciano Pavarotti,
Bond, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Caroline Dale.
PLACIDO DOMINGO & FRIENDS
Dominic joined Sting at the "Placido Domingo
and Friends" concert and gala which was held at the Los Angeles Opera House
on 14 May 2003 and raised $1 million for the company. Introduced by Hugh Jackman,
Sting and Dominic performed Fragile for guests that included Sidney
Poitier, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and Salma Hayak.
DOMINIC'S
NEW VIDEO!
Dominic's video for Albinoni's Adagio in G
Minor is now available to watch

is being featured

Dominic told Sting.com recently that "They've got me
standing at the top of a tall building in London and then at the edge of a
cliff at Beachy Head [Sussex, England], a spot known for suicides. "I'm
right at the edge and they've got me harnessed in! And that's where I'm
going to jump off of if the CD doesn't do well," he quipped.
